Verify pilots’ academic certificates
The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh on Sunday asked all airlines, helicopter operators, and flying schools in the country to verify the academic certificates of their pilots and student pilots by May 31.
A letter signed by Air Commodore Shah Kawsar Ahmed Choudhury, member (flight standard and regulations) at CAAB, was sent to 22 airlines including Biman, US-Bangla, Novo Air, and Air Astra.
The move comes after The Daily Star recently reported that a first officer of Biman named Sadia Ahmed forged her HSC certificate to be eligible for the job.
Another Biman first officer named Al Mehedi Islam was terminated for forging his Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL).
The licence had a forged signature of Shirin Sultana, former assistant director of flight safety at CAAB.
According to Civil Aviation Rules 84 cited in the letter, the minimum required academic qualification for a private pilot licence is education up to SSC or its equivalent while commercial pilot licence and ATPL requires HSC from science or its equivalent with physics and mathematics.
Several top officials of Biman said it is not their job to verify the authenticity of pilots' academic certificates and the regulatory authority should do it.
