In 2016, Adnan Sami renounced his Pakistani citizenship and became an Indian citizen. This move was criticised by people from both sides of the border, with some from Pakistan even saying that Adnan moved there because of money.

In a recent interview, the singer-songwriter stated that many people "volunteered their unsolicited opinions" on his life and developed their "own reasonings".

"Some people in Pakistan turned around and said, 'Oh, he has chosen India because he has more money over there, he's making more money over there'," he told Humans of Bombay.

"I had to ask, 'Excuse me. Do you know anything about my family history? Do you realise that money has never been an issue in my life?' I consider myself fortunate to have been born and raised in a wealthy family. I've given up a lot of money because there's a huge amount of stuff that I could have inherited from there (Pakistan) that I've given away," added Adnan Sami.

The singer wondered why people found it so difficult to accept that he loved India and felt at home here.

"The kind of love and appreciation I got over here overwhelmed me as an artiste," shared the singer. The "Tera Chehra" singer gets that the animosity between Pakistan and India has created rift between the two countries.

"They think it's a political issue, but the point is, I am uninterested in politics. I work as a musician," said the singer.

Adnan Sami previously revealed to Mashable India that it took him 18 years to obtain an Indian citizenship. "It took me 18 years, but what I'm trying to say here is that I didn't say anything to the world about this in those 18 years. I was turned down twice. I had to give up my original citizenship, and was stateless for a time. I didn't belong to any country for a year and a half. A passport is just a piece of paper, but I was not owned by any country, and in that state, I couldn't travel or do anything," he explained.
