Bangabazar fire: 4 firefighters injured as mob attacks fire service HQ
At least four firefighters were injured after a mob attacked the Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters, which is located close to the Bangabazar Shopping Complex, where a fire continues to rage five hours after breaking out.
Two of the four firefighters -- Rabiul Islam and Atikur Rahman -- were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Rashed-Bin-Khaled, duty officer of the fire service.
He said the attackers also vandalised several vehicles parked inside the headquarters.
Witnesses said a group of people including some shopkeepers, being frustrated by the fire still burning, attacked the fire service headquarters around 9:30am.
They threw bricks chunks, leaving at least four firefighters injured, they said.
Forty-eight firefighting units are trying to douse the file that originated around 6:10am and spread to nearby markets too.
Meanwhile, another firefighter Mehedi Hasan fell sick after inhaling smoke while fighting the blaze, fire officials said.
Arjun Baroi, an official of Lalbagh fire station, said Mehedi entered the building to try and douse the flames, but he got stuck there. Other firefighters rescued him, and he is now undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
