I 'inwardly cringe' when the song is played: Lisa Ray on 'Afreen Afreen'
Lisa Ray revealed that she didn't like her super hit music video "Afreen Afreen". The actress revealed that she "inwardly cringes" everytime the song is played.
Javed Akhtar wrote "Afreen Afreen," which was touted as one of the biggest pop singles of the 1990s. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan composed and sung the song. Lisa appeared in the 10-minute-long video alongside Himanshu Malik.
"I have to confess I have felt uncomfortable sharing or celebrating the 'Afreen Afreen' song which was a breakthrough video of the 90s and iconic song by maestro Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan because I so strongly identified with it," Lisa wrote in a lengthy post on Instagram by sharing a small clip from the music video.
"The song still plays on cue for events where I am expected to speak about various areas of my life experience, and I cringe inwardly while politely smiling," said the actress.
Lisa stated in her remark that she now understands how youth may connect with the song even now, despite the fact that she does not resemble how she looked back then.
"Today, as great troubadours I listened to in my youth pass away, I recognize the power of a song to elicit an emotional response in an audience that is tied to who you once were - to a moment in time that is often defined by hope, wonder, and the optimism of youth," read her post.
Of course, hearing this song today is no longer about a personal association for Lisa, but represents a universal rite of passage for her.
"Honestly, what would be a revelation today is for people to recognize this fact and release me from my link with the song for the reasons stated above (after all, I'm simply roaming about in the desert)," her post concluded.
