Payra Power Plant shuts down completely due to coal shortage

The 1,320MW coal-fired Payra Power Plant in Patuakhali has been shut temporarily due to shortage of coal.

Operation at one of the two units -- each with a capacity of 660MW -- of the power plant was suspended at 12:15pm, Shah Abdul Mawla, the plant's manager, told The Daily Star.

The other unit of the plant has been closed since May 25.

The power plant may remain closed for 20-25 days, its Superintendent Engineer Shah Abdul Haseeb told The Daily Star yesterday.

The northern part of the country including Patuakhali may suffer more loadshedding due to the power plant closure.

Earlier on June 3, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid told about the suspension of the power plant's operation due to shortage of the coal.
