Flood in Chattogram: 16 dead and 3 missing

At least 16 people died and three are missing due to floods triggered in different areas of Chattogram over the last week till today.

The District Relief and Rehabilitation Department confirmed the information to The Daily Star this afternoon.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md Saifullah Majumdar said 16 people have been confirmed dead in five upazilas of Chattogram district so far. There is no information found yet about the missing people.

When asked about the damage, he said, "It is not possible yet to tell the extent of the damage. We are trying to collect this information with the help of various upazila government offices and public representatives. It will take at least one more week to know the actual damage."

He also said there has been extensive damage to homesteads as well as crops due to continuous rains and landslides for several days. It will take time to figure it out. Besides, the help of the agriculture and fisheries office is being taken to know about the loss of fish farmers and livestock, he added.

It has been reported that among the dead, seven bodies were found in Satkania, four in Lohagara, two in Chandanaish, and one each in Banshkhali, Raozan and Chattogram city, and handed over to their families, said Saifullah.

Out of the 15 upazilas of Chattogram, the southern upazilas of Satkania, Banshkhali and Chandnaish have been the worst affected. In addition to that there has been damage in the low-lying areas of Patiya and Anwara and in the northern areas of Raozan, Rangunia, Sitakunda, Mirsarai, Hathazari and Fatikchhari, the local administration said.

Traffic has not completely returned to normal on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway as the surface in many areas has been damaged due to the flood.

Officer-in-charge of Dohazari Highway Police Station Md Erfan Khan said that the traffic on the road was blocked till yesterday morning.
