Green coconuts being sold at a wholesale market in the capital’s Jatrabari for Tk 65-70 yesterday. In retail, however, they sell for as high as Tk 130-180 each. Even though they are abundant throughout the country, coconuts are getting expensive due to rising demand. Dengue patients are often prescribed coconut water to stay hydrated.

These women and the child are having to be especially careful while leaving their homes in Rangipara area of Chattogram’s South Agrabad yesterday as the drains there are not only open but also without any safety fences. Just three days ago, an 18-month-old child’s body was found in a drain after he went missing in the area. Such incidents are all too frequent in the port city with the authorities concerned seemingly ignoring the fatalities and injuries caused by unprotected drains and canals.
