Netizens call out Golden Globes Awards’ two new categories
Golden Globe Awards recently announced that they are adding two new categories which will be effective from their 2024 edition. The two new categories are the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award and the Best Performance in Stand-up Comedy for Television Award.
Golden Globes Awards announced the new additional categories on their social media accounts. However, the announcement seemed to have sparked a spiral of negative opinions from the netizens.
After reading the criteria for the new categories many internet surfers speculated that the categories are just there to honour Greta Gerwig's "Barbie".
The criteria for the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award entail:
1. Films must have grossed at least $150 million during the release.
2. $100 million out of the total should have come from the US box office.
3. Streaming films with good viewership from "recognised industry sources."
4. Eight films to be nominated.
5. Films nominated in this category can also compete in the Best Motion Picture Drama or Comedy category.
A netizen commented after seeing the post, "Cinematic and Box Office Achievement"? Why don't they just call it Best Popular Movie's category exactly? You know the one that got cancelled by The Academy. (thinking emoji)."
Meanwhile, the criteria for the Best Performance in Stand-up Comedy for Television Award includes:
1. Outstanding work from a comic in a traditional stand-up format.
2. Or as a breakout comic in a troupe or ensemble.
3. Comedy specials must air on broadcast, basic and premium cable, streaming and pay-per-view cable.
4. Projects must have a recognised distributor.
5. Individual social media accounts will not be eligible.
Another internet commenter shared about the Stand-up Comedy for Television Award, "How the hell is anyone gonna give out the award for best stand-up performance? There's no standard on what makes something properly funny at all."
