Google unveils Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel Watch 2, and more
Google laid out its latest series of devices on Wednesday, headlined by the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones. The event also highlighted the Pixel Watch 2 and the unveiling of Android 14 for the public.
For those who missed the live event, the Made by Google show can be revisited, or here's a comprehensive look at the major announcements.
Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro
These are the centrepieces of Google's launch, powered by the brand new Tensor G3 chip, claimed to be Google's most potent yet. The Pixel 8 boasts generative AI features, powered by the chip, with the machine learning model being 10 times more intricate than its predecessor, the Pixel 6.
Google's enhancements to AI technology now encompass areas beyond just image processing. The Tensor G3 bolsters Call Screen, improving spam detection, and Clear Calling promises improved call clarity. A novel feature is the audio Magic Eraser, allowing users to eliminate undesired sounds from videos.
The Pixel 8 offers a 6.2-inch Actua display, boasting vivid colours and sharp details, with an enhanced refresh rate of 120Hz. The Pixel 8 Pro, on the other hand, offers a larger 6.7-inch display with even greater clarity and brightness.
Both models come with significant camera improvements. The Pixel 8 Pro, in particular, is armed with a 48-megapixel Quad PD ultrawide and telephoto lens. Google's emphasis this year also pivots towards security, with a promise of seven years of OS and security updates.
Pre-orders have already commenced, with the Pixel 8 priced at $699 and the Pixel 8 Pro at $999. Special pre-order bonuses include the Pixel Buds Pro and Pixel Watch 2.
Pixel Watch 2
The Pixel Watch 2 is a redesign of Google's maiden smartwatch. It boasts water protection, lighter build, and comes in four elegant colour combinations. Google's focus for this device has been health, fitness, safety, and productivity. Features such as advanced heart rate tracking, sleep tracking, stress management, and more are present. Pricing begins at $349, with availability from October 12.
Pixel Buds Pro
The earbuds arrive in two fresh colours and come equipped with various innovative features, including a low-latency mode, Clear Calling on Pixel, and Conversation Detection. A notable addition is the hearing wellness tool which educates users about their listening habits.
Android 14
This operating system update champions personalisation. A highlight is the generative AI which allows custom backgrounds creation. It also brings along several accessibility settings and more user control over data and privacy. Google also unveiled a feature drop for Pixel devices, enhancing the experience on their phones and tablets.
Assistant with Bard
Google is merging Assistant with Bard AI. This aims to amalgamate data from various apps and services, enhancing the functionality of Google Assistant. For instance, details from a Gmail invite can now be directly accessed. This feature is set to roll out soon on Android and iOS to a select group before a wider release in the coming months.
