Cyclone Remal damages crops on 3,074 hectares in Jashore
Cyclone Remal has damaged crops on 3,074 hectares of land in Jashore while making its way through the district yesterday, according to local Department of Agriculture Extension.
"Various types of crops have been affected by the storm in Jashore. Vegetables, banana, mango, sesame, papaya, mung, chilli, jute, litchi, and lemon were all harmed by Remal," said District Agriculture Office Deputy Director Sushanto Kumar Tarafdar.
"In Jashore, jute has been cultivated on 23,550 hectares of land, litchi on 641 hectares, lemon on 148 hectares, banana on 587 hectares, mango on 3,924 hectares, sesame on 1,680 hectares, papaya on 559 hectares, mung on 515 hectares, chili on 435 hectares, and vegetables on 14,220 hectares of land.
"Of these, the cyclone damaged 3,074 hectares of crops, which includes 1,429 hectares of vegetables, 67 hectares of bananas, 114 hectares of mango, 331 hectares of sesame, 26 hectares of papaya, 36 hectares of mung, 60 hectares of chili, 972 hectares of jute, 36 hectares of litchi, and 3 hectares of lemon," he added.
He further said that the amount of crop damaged due to the cyclone could be more; this will be determined once the storm's effects have completely subsided.
Meanwhile, Agriculture Officer of Jashore's Sadar upazila, Hasan Ali, said that the damage of crops will have an impact on the market. As a result, the crops may get costlier.
