‘Wolfs 2’: Apple pulls the plug on Clooney-Pitt crime caper sequel
Apple has officially confirmed that plans for a sequel to its hit crime caper "Wolfs", starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, have been scrapped, according to a Variety report.
The announcement follows comments from director Jon Watts during an interview with Collider on Friday, where he stated, "I don't know what I'm directing next, and I don't think there's going to be a 'Wolfs' sequel."
This news comes three months after Apple signed Watts to develop the follow-up to "Wolfs", a film that made waves with its all-star cast and gripping storyline. The cancellation marks the end of what appeared to be a promising collaboration.
In August, Apple had made a significant change to the film's rollout strategy, pulling its original plan for a wide theatrical release. Instead, "Wolfs" had a limited one-week theatrical engagement on September 20, before its streaming debut on Apple TV+ a week later. The move raised eyebrows, especially after Clooney had previously expressed in 2023 that he and Pitt had worked out a deal to ensure a theatrical release.
The shift to a limited run was seen by some as a departure from the movie's initial plans, though it was still accompanied by the announcement of a sequel, with Clooney and Pitt set to return.
The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in early September, went on to become the most-watched feature in Apple TV+ history, with the tech giant boasting about its success. Apple had won the rights to "Wolfs" in a competitive bidding war, capitalising on the reunion of "Ocean's Eleven" stars Clooney and Pitt and securing the talents of Watts, known for his work on the "Spider-Man" franchise.
Despite the movie's success on the platform, the cancellation of the sequel has left many wondering what comes next for the project. "Wolfs" had been positioned as a major success for Apple, with Matt Dentler, head of Apple Original Films, calling it a "global blockbuster." However, with the sequel now off the table, the future of the franchise seems uncertain.
Fans of the film will likely be disappointed by the abrupt halt in plans for "Wolfs 2", leaving what was once an exciting follow-up in limbo.
