Trade through Tamabil land port and three other land customs stations in Sylhet and Moulvibazar along the Indian border have been disrupted for several days due to multiple issues.

The disruptions are linked to protests in India's Sribhumi district (formerly Karimganj) in Assam over the arrest of former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, according to customs officials in Sylhet.

Imports via Zakiganj, Sheola, and Chatlapur land customs stations have been affected since Monday, they added.

Coal and stone imports through Tamabil land port have also been suspended for 17 days as traders halted operations over a dispute concerning the weighing scale at the port.

Sanatani Oikya Mancha, a Hindutva organisation in Sribhumi, has been protesting since Sunday, claiming that Chinmoy's arrest constitutes oppression against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh.

On Monday morning, a group of activists from the organisation attempted to enter Bangladesh through Shutarkandi, the counterpart of Sheola.

Indian police and Border Security Force (BSF) intervened to control the situation.

Following this, the organisation called for a halt to export-import activities through the three land customs stations along the Sribhumi district border.

As a precaution, no goods were imported through Zakiganj, Sheola, or Chatlapur on Monday and Tuesday.

Imports at Zakiganj and Chatlapur remain suspended today, while operations at Sheola have returned to normal, according to Maminul Islam, deputy commissioner (customs) of the Customs, Excise, and VAT Commissionerate in Sylhet.

Meanwhile, at Tamabil land port, coal and stone imports from India's Meghalaya have been stalled as traders demanded that fees be adjusted to account as they found debris mixed with the stone shipments.

Tanvir Mehedy, a revenue officer of the land port, said, "Traders stopped the import of stone and coal over a dispute. We are trying to encourage them to resume importing, however, the dispute with the Land Port Authority needs to be settled by discussion and customs has nothing to do in this regard."
