Old video of attack on Hindu women circulated as recent: dismislab
A video showing an attack on Hindu women is circulating on social media, with claims that Islamist groups in Bangladesh are targeting them to seize land.
Fact-checking organisation dismislab, upon verification, found the claim to be false.
The video is over two years old and unrelated to land-grabbing, said dismislab, adding that reverse image search using keyframes revealed that the video was posted on Bangla Daily Prothom Alo's YouTube channel two years ago. The video, titled "Allegation of violence on women over picking Java plums" (in Bangla), reported an incident in Chattogram's Sitakunda, where women were assaulted during a dispute over fruit-picking.
Several accounts on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) shared the video, presenting it as recent. For instance, verified handle Hindupost: "Bangladeshi Islamists attack defenseless Hindu women, in apparent land grab attempt".
The video has been viewed over 10,000 times and reposted nearly 500 times.
Dismislab said the claims associating this old video with current communal tensions in Bangladesh are misleading and have no factual basis. This incident from 2022 is being misused on social media to create discord.
