Seven idols were vandalised and gold ornaments were stolen from Mahashashan Kali Mata Temple in Jamalpur's Sarishabari upazila early today.

On information, Sarishabari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sharmin Akhtar along with police, army and intelligence agency personnel visited the spot, locals said.

Jamalpur District Additional Superintendent of Police Sohel Mahmud said, "We have visited the spot. Legal action will be taken after investigation."

The temple committee's President Uttam Kumar Tewari said that they found the idols broken when they went for prayers at the temple at Kamrabad in the morning.

He said, "A group of miscreants might have done this to create a communal tension in the country."

He strongly condemned the incident and demanded a proper investigation and immediate arrest of the culprits.

The police have not yet been able to arrest anyone in this connection.
