Maulana Saad’s followers leave Ijtema ground after clash

After a deadly clash at Biswa Ijtema venue in Gazipur, the Tabligh faction loyal to Maulana Saad Kandhalvi have started to leave the ground.

"I request all my fellow devotees to leave the ground," said Reza Arif, a representative of the Maulana Saad faction.

He was talking to reporters at the Secretariat after a meeting with Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

"Considering the request [from adviser of the interim government] we have decided to leave the ground so that no more problem is created," he added.

At the Biswa Ijtema grounds on the bank of the Turag river, devotees who had received the instructions were seen returning home.

Tongi West Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Iskandar Habibur Rahman told The Daily Star that in the wake of the incident of casualties in the clash at Bishwa Ijtema ground, the Gazipur Metropolitan Police has issued a ban on the movement of more than one person within three kilometers of the Biswa Ijtema ground.

Within the last 2 hours after receiving the instructions, it [the Ijtema grounds] has become mostly empty, he said around 4:00pm.

Haji Solaiman, a 60-year-old devotee who had come to attend the Jor Ijtema, said he did not know that the two sides would fight at Ijtema.

"Today, I am returning home with my bags and luggage," he added.

Another attendee, Mohammad Aminul Islam said, "I am a follower of Zubair. Last night, the followers of the Saad group suddenly attacked us. Our brothers have died. Now the government has issued instructions and we are going home."

Devotees were seen going from Tongi Station Road on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway towards Gazipur Chowrasta, Pubail and Dhaka.

Earlier, four people were killed and another 50 injured in a clash between the Saad faction and the Zubair faction over the control of Biswa Ijtema ground in Gazipur's Tongi upazila.

The clash erupted between the followers of Maulana Zobayer and Maulana Saad Kandhalvi on Ijtema ground around 3:00am, police said.
