Barack Obama names ‘All We Imagine as Light’ among his 2024’s favourite films
Former US President Barack Obama has once again unveiled his annual list of favourite films, and this year, Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia's "All We Imagine as Light" has secured a spot alongside cinematic heavyweights like "Dune: Part Two", "Anora", and "The Piano Lesson".
The announcement, made on Obama's social media accounts on Friday, marks yet another milestone for the Indian film, which has been making waves internationally.
In his Instagram post, Obama wrote, "Here are a few movies I'd recommend checking out this year," accompanied by a photo creative listing his top picks. The list includes titles such as "Conclave", "The Promised Land", "The Seed of the Sacred Fig", "Didi", and "A Complete Unknown" alongside Kapadia's critically acclaimed work.
"All We Imagine as Light" stands out as the only Indian film on Obama's list, cementing its reputation as a groundbreaking achievement in global cinema. The film's remarkable journey began with its historic win of the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, making it the first Indian film in 30 years to feature in the festival's main competition section.
Since then, it has continued to garner accolades, including nominations for two Golden Globe Awards and the Critics' Choice Awards. Most recently, Kapadia received the prestigious Spirit of Cinema Award at the 29th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK).
Despite not being selected as India's official entry for the Oscars, "All We Imagine as Light" is being aggressively campaigned in major categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
The film explores the intertwined lives of Prabha, a troubled nurse who reconnects with her estranged husband through an unexpected gift, and Anu, her young roommate who is navigating intimacy and self-discovery. Set against the backdrop of a serene beach village, their journeys unfold in profound and unexpected ways.
Featuring stellar performances by Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam, the movie is a joint Indo-French production by Petit Chaos (France), Chalk & Cheese, and Another Birth (India).
