Jamboree Park: Chattogram’s luminous urban oasis
"The lights are magical," exclaimed Shuvechchha Ghosh as she watched her child marvel at the evening spectacle of Jamboree Park.
The crisp winter air swept through Chattogram's Agrabad, but the chill did little to deter the throngs of visitors eagerly awaiting the park's highlight—the mesmerising lightworks.
On a winter day, the afternoon swiftly gives way to evening. As the sun starts to dip behind the horizon, Jamboree Park transformed into a luminous wonderland. Hundreds of visitors gathered to witness the interplay of lights and fountains.
The park, a 50,000 square-foot oasis with an amoeba-shaped reservoir, offers a blend of natural beauty and architectural brilliance.
Children giggled in delight, and young couples were seen strolling hand in hand.
Situated in the heart of Agrabad, the park has become a beacon for recreation seekers. With its expansive green spaces, three-tiered galleries, and dual water fountains, it offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Visitors flock to the fountains as the afternoon fades, eager to secure the best view of the dazzling light show.
Fitness enthusiasts also frequent the park, taking advantage of the 8,000-foot walkway that winds through its verdant expanse.
Over 10,000 trees, representing 65 species, provide a lush canopy, creating a serene environment for families and friends. Many people with families were seen sitting under the trees on the grass.
But Jamboree Park wasn't always a haven of beauty. Just a few years ago, it was a desolate field, known as Jamboree Field, a gathering spot for illicit activities under the cover of darkness.
The transformation began in 2018 when the Public Works Department (PWD) undertook a Tk 18 crore project to revamp the area. Today, it stands as a testament to urban rejuvenation, offering a safe and vibrant space for all.
Local resident Shamsunnahar reflected on the park's evolution.
"We had no such place in Agrabad before," she said.
"The PWD has turned a barren field into a modern park where we can relax and enjoy the scenic beauty."
Shuvechchha Ghosh visited the park with her child and husband last week.
"I never realised the park was built so beautifully," she said.
"The dazzling blend of nature and architecture is stunning. My child is mesmerised by the lightworks, and I'm enjoying the serene walk along the artificial lake," she added.
Abdul Halim, an expatriate visiting from Europe with his son, said, "I hadn't seen this park in years. My son insisted we come, and it's been a wonderful experience."
Though he noted a concern, saying, "Some visitors are littering, throwing plastic cans into the water. We must keep the park clean."
Jamboree Park operates in two sessions: morning from 5:30am to 10:00am and evening from 3:30pm to 8:00pm, catering to both early risers and evening strollers.
