Icy Himalayan winds send shivers down Dinajpur

Locals bracing for upcoming cold waves

Dinajpur and its surrounding districts are facing severe cold as icy northern winds accelerate, accompanied by overcast skies and light rain from last night, which has caused significant hardship for residents, disrupting daily life and affecting livelihoods.

Tofazzal Hossain, the acting officer at the Dinajpur Regional Weather Observatory, said the temperature in Dinajpur was recorded at 15°C this morning, with humidity at 89 percent. However, wind speeds increased from 2 kilometres per hour early in the day to 8–10 kilometres per hour by 9:00am, making the temperature feel significantly colder, even during the daytime.

In this situation, forecasters predict a further drop of 5–7°C in daytime temperatures and 2–3°C at night over the next few days, he said.

The combination of cold wind and drizzle has reduced outdoor activity both in rural and urban areas. Roads of Dinajpur town were largely deserted with a low number of vehicles, with only a few braving the harsh weather.

Auto-rickshaw driver Delwar Hossain said, "The cold wind is getting stronger. Hardly anyone is outside, so I've made little income throughout the day. I'll head home because there's no point suffering in this cold without earning."

Sagar Islam, a farmer in Tegra village of Biral upazila of Dinajpur, said he is struggling to find labourers for his cropland.

"No one is willing to work at the cropland without extra pay, which we can't afford," he lamented.

Md Abdur Razzak, a resident from Uttar Gosaipur village, said," There has been no shining of sun since this morning, and now it's raining lightly at intervals. This makes the cold even more unbearable. If it rains heavily, the situation will become even worse."

Meteorologist Tofazzal attributed the weather to a shifting vapour belt near the Himalayas, which had temporarily blocked northern winds. As it moves eastward, it has reactivated cold airflows toward Bangladesh, with cold waves expected to begin on January 9.

Residents are bracing for tougher days ahead as the extreme weather continues to affect the region, he added.
