Bidhan Rebeiro to represent Bangladesh as Berlinale jury member
The 75th Berlin International Film Festival is set to begin in the second week of February. This year, Bangladeshi film critic Bidhan Rebeiro will serve as a jury member at the festival. He has been selected as a Fipresci jury member in the Panorama section of the festival.
Speaking to Prothom Alo yesterday afternoon, Bidhan confirmed the news, confirming that he will leave Dhaka on February 9 to attend the event.
Previously, this Bangladeshi film critic also represented the nation as a Fipresci jury member at the 75th Cannes Film Festival in 2022.
Regarding his selection, Bidhan shared, "Watching films comes from my love for cinema. Participating in international film festivals allows me to understand different perspectives on films while also refining my own viewpoints. Attending a festival of this scale is not just a personal achievement but also a representation of Bangladesh."
"It is significant that a Bangladeshi film critic is serving as a jury member on an international platform. For me, this is a moment of joy and pride. However, I am not sure how people in Bangladesh perceive it," said Bidhan.
Speaking about the significance of such events in his career and life, he remarked, "Major film festivals showcase the first screenings of new films from renowned directors and classic-style productions. As a jury member, I get the opportunity to watch these films before anyone else."
"Another key aspect is that this year marks the 100th anniversary of Fipresci. Over the years, many acclaimed filmmakers have gained recognition through the Fipresci Award. This platform will continue to highlight outstanding filmmakers in the future, and perhaps one day, I will be able to say the same. Since I have an infinite passion for cinema, this experience brings me a sense of fulfilment," he concluded.
