Many celebrities have lost their homes in the Los Angeles wildfires. Award ceremonies have been postponed, and shootings have been cancelled. Amid this, Oscar-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis has announced a donation of $1 million to aid those affected.

Film studios are stepping up to help as devastating wildfires sweep through Los Angeles County, destroying over 10,000 buildings, claiming lives, and causing damage estimated in the tens of billions. Now, Disney has announced a significant donation as well.

Disney, based in Burbank, announced on Friday a $15 million donation to support various relief efforts. The funds will go to organisations such as the American Red Cross, the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.

"As this tragedy unfolds, The Walt Disney Company is dedicated to helping our community and staff recover and rebuild," said Disney CEO Bob Iger. "Walt Disney came to Los Angeles with little more than his imagination, and it was here he built his dreams and created stories loved by people worldwide. We're proud to help this strong and vibrant community in its time of need."

At the same time, Paramount Global's co-chiefs, Brian Robbins, Chris McCarthy, and George Cheeks, announced in a staff memo that the company would donate £800,000 to groups like the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, California Fire Foundation, Red Cross, Direct Relief, World Central Kitchen, and Best Friends Animal Society.

"As wildfires continue to devastate parts of Los Angeles, our thoughts are with all those affected, especially families who have lost their homes or been displaced," they wrote. They also shared that CBS, part of Paramount, is driving donations to the Red Cross, while a public service announcement will air across the network. KCAL, a local station, has already raised over £240,000 for relief. Paramount Pictures and CBS staff are also donating meals to first responders, while The Daily Show on Comedy Central is supporting the California Fire Foundation, and BET is covering the fires' impact on Altadena's historic Black community.

As of Friday, the Palisades Fire has burned more than 21,000 acres, while the Eaton Fire in Altadena has spread across 13,000 acres. The scale of destruction is still being assessed. AccuWeather initially estimated the fires' economic damage at £40 billion to £43 billion but later revised it upwards to £105 billion to £115 billion.

Federal support is expected, with the Biden administration declaring a major disaster on January 8, following California Governor Gavin Newsom's state of emergency declaration. FEMA is mobilising resources to assist affected residents.
