AL offices, Mujib murals demolished in Dinajpur, Naogaon, Joypurhat

Awami League (AL) offices, properties of party leaders, and murals of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman were demolished across Dinajpur, Naogaon, and Joypurhat last night.

In Dinajpur, demolitions began at 10:00pm and continued past midnight. The district Awami League headquarters and the Dinajpur Sadar Upazila AL office were bulldozed, along with a structure belonging to former lawmaker Iqbalur Rahim.

Additionally, the Chirirbandar Upazila AL office was vandalized. In Naogaon, attacks began at 5:30pm with vandalism at the district AL office.

Half an hour later, the residence of former food minister, Sadhan Chandra Majumder, in Post Office Para was targeted.

Vandalism, arson spread

Witnesses said the house was set on fire after breaking down the main gate and bulldozing sections of the property.

Local sources indicated that a procession, led by activists of the anti-discrimination student movement and local residents, marched from Muktir Mor to Sarishahati Mor before initiating the destruction. Protesters placed a banner reading "Public Toilet" in front of the demolished AL office.

In Joypurhat's Panchbibi upazila, two murals of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Panch Matha Chattar and the Freedom Fighter Complex at the bus stand, were demolished with an excavator. However, murals of the four national leaders and the seven Bir Sreshtho martyrs remained untouched. Witnesses reported that protesters chanted slogans against the Awami League, Sheikh Hasina, and Sheikh Mujib during the demolitions.

Protesters demolish Mujib’s murals, AL offices in different districts

Following the fall of the previous government, parts of the murals had been defaced, but their main structures remained intact until this recent incident. After demolishing the mural at Panch Matha Chattar, the excavator was moved to the Freedom Fighter Complex, where the second Mujib mural was destroyed.
