BPL 2025

BCB to assume control of drafted foreign player payments in BPL

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) informed that the board would be assuming "responsibility for the contract and match fees of all international players signed from the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) draft", however, it made no such commitment for the directly signed overseas cricketers.

Through a press release on Saturday, BCB said it was undertaking a few measures to ensure the efficient operation of the BPL and the welfare of the participating players.

The 11th edition of the BPL came to a close yesterday with Fortune Barishal beating Chittagong Kings in the final in Mirpur to clinch back-to-back titles. However, the biggest talking point throughout the tournament was the players' non-payment issue.

New additions Durbar Rajshahi have been the worst offenders and have failed to clear the dues of both their local and foreign recruits. The franchise owner had vowed to complete the payment by February 10 in three instalments, however, he has reportedly missed the second instalment which was supposed to be cleared yesterday.

Among Rajshahi's foreign recruits, Sri Lankan Lahiru Samarakoon was signed from the draft. But players like Zimbabwe's Ryan Burl and Pakistan's Mohammad Haris were direct signings. So, according to the BCB's latest press release, while the board would take responsibility for Samarakoon's payment, it won't do the same for Burl and Haris.

The press release also mentioned that the BCB would oversee all logistical arrangements for a smoother return of overseas players to their respective destinations after the completion of their BPL commitments.

The BCB will also collaborate closely with BPL franchises to establish stricter financial protocols, safeguard player interests, and streamline payment processes.

"These initiatives underscore the BCB's commitment to upholding the integrity of the BPL and providing a professional experience for all players, both domestic and international. The BCB will continue to engage with all stakeholders to strengthen the operational and financial aspects of the league," BCB president Faruque Ahmed was quoted as saying in the press release.
