The Arakan Army of Myanmar has abducted four fishermen at gunpoint along with their boat from the Naf river estuary in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar.
The abduction took place at around 11:00am today near the Golar Char area of Shah Porir Dwip in Teknaf.
The abducted fishermen are Md Hasan, 30, Abdur Rakim, 20, Md Jaber, 26, and Md Hasan, 16. All are residents of Dakkhin Para in Shah Porir Dwip.
Bashir Ahmed, president of the South Boat Terminal in Shah Porir Dwip, confirmed the incident.
"They went fishing in the Naf river as usual in the morning when the Arakan Army abducted them along with their boat. The incident has created panic among the fishing community. The matter has been reported to the Border Guard Bangladesh and local administration," he said.
Lt Col Ashiqur Rahman, commanding officer of BGB Battalion 2 in Teknaf, said they haven't received any official complaint regarding the issue. However, they were informed of the matter and were working to resolve the issue.
Details will be known later, he added.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sheikh Ehsan Uddin said, "We heard about the abduction. Our law enforcement agencies are working to bring them back."
Earlier, on October 9 last year, 58 fishermen from Teknaf's Shah Porir Dwip were detained by Myanmar navy with six of their trawlers.
One fisherman was killed and two others were injured in the incident when the Myanmar navy opened fire on them.
The fishermen were later released following strong protests from Bangladesh.
On October 15, BGB rescued and repatriated 16 Bangladeshi fishermen who had been held by the Arakan Army in Myanmar's Rakhine State.
