Manna placed on 10-day remand

Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna was placed on a 10-day remand today in a case filed against him allegedly for trying to instigate revolt by the armed forces.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman of Dhaka passed the order after Manna was produced before it in the afternoon.

Abdul Barek, a sub-inspector of Gulshan Police Station and also investigation officer in the case, produced him before the court with a 10-day remand prayer. 

SI Sohel Rana of Gulshan Police Station filed the case against Manna last night, hours after his arrest in his niece's house in Gulshan.

Earlier while talking to reporters at the DMP media centre, Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said, "We will seek permission from the home ministry to file a sedition case against him (Manna)."

Amid controversy over leaked phone conversations with BNP leader Sadeque Hossain Khoka and an unnamed person, Manna went to his niece's house on Road 17/A in Banani on Monday evening. Hours later, he was picked up from there by plainclothes men, family sources said.

More than 20 hours after "plainclothes men had picked up" Mahmudur Rahman Manna early yesterday, officials said he was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion and handed over to the Detective Branch of police.

In the early hours of today, Assistant Commissioner Nurul Alam of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Gulshan zone) told The Daily Star that Manna was taken to the DB office on Minto Road after midnight.

The officials, however, didn't give details about his arrest.

According to family members, some plainclothes men, introducing themselves as Detective Branch officials, picked him up from his niece's residence at the capital's Banani around 3:30am yesterday.
