The Bangladeshi film "Mastul" will take centre stage today with its premiere at the 47th Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF), marking its international debut in the festival's main competition. The film, directed by Mohammad Nuruzzaman, is Bangladesh's sole entry in the prestigious lineup, with screenings scheduled for April 22 and 24.​

The MIFF, established in 1935, is the world's second-oldest film festival and is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, featuring over 200 films from 50 countries, from April 17 to 24.​

"Mastul" unfolds aboard a fuel-supplying oil tanker navigating Bangladesh's rivers. The narrative centres on Maqbool, a compassionate cook portrayed by Fazlur Rahman Babu, who befriends Noora, a young stowaway. Their bond challenges the ship's hierarchy, particularly with a power-hungry helmsman who suspects Maqbool of espionage. The film explores themes of trust, compassion, and the complexities of human relationships.​

The ensemble cast includes Deepak Suman, Arif Hasan, Aminur Rahman Mukul, Julfikar Chanchal, and Mukit Shikder. The cinematography, led by Mohammad Arifuzzaman, captures the confined yet dynamic environment of life aboard a vessel.​

Director Nuruzzaman, along with key cast members, including Fazlur Rahman Babu and Deepak Suman, are attending the festival to present the film and engage with international audiences. Nuruzzaman expressed pride in representing Bangladeshi cinema on such a significant platform, stating that the selection is a testament to the country's growing presence in global cinema.​

"Mastul" is produced by Cinemaker, Lotus Films, and Gulmohor, with music composed by Chaitanya Rajbongshi. The film's premiere at MIFF signifies yet another milestone for Bangladeshi independent cinema, highlighting its evolving narrative styles and storytelling prowess.​
