OpenAI partners with Google Cloud for AI infrastructure supply

OpenAI has expanded its computing power sources by partnering with Google Cloud, according to an update on its website. The deal, finalised in May after months of negotiations, marks a strategic shift as the ChatGPT maker diversifies beyond its primary backer, Microsoft.

As per a report by Reuters, the AI company now relies on four cloud providers, Microsoft, Oracle, CoreWeave, and now Google, to meet soaring demand for AI training and deployment. This move follows OpenAI's recent $500 billion Stargate data centre project with SoftBank and Oracle, as well as multi-billion-dollar agreements with CoreWeave.

The Google deal highlights the intense computing needs of advanced AI models and OpenAI's efforts to reduce reliance on Microsoft's Azure, its exclusive infrastructure provider until January. While Microsoft remains a key partner, OpenAI is securing additional capacity to scale its operations amid the AI boom.

No financial terms were disclosed, but the arrangement signals growing collaboration, and competition, among tech giants in the race to power next-generation AI.
