2 killed, 7 injured as bus hits truck in Rangpur

Two passengers were killed and at least seven others, including two policemen men were injured when a passenger bus rammed into a standing truck at a police checkpoint in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur early today.
The deceased were identified as Alamgir Hossain, 40, son of Abdus Samad from Gouranga Bazar in Dhanbari upazila of Tangail, and Ashraful Islam, 42, son of Amin Uddin from Mokandabari Hajipara village in Jamalpur.
Among the injured were on-duty police constable Mizanur Rahman and Sergeant Palash Chandra Pal, along with five other bus passengers.
The accident took place around 1:00am in Bishmail area on the Rangpur-Bogura highway, said Omar Faruk, officer-in-charge of the Barodorga Highway Police Station.
According to the OC, police had stopped a truck for inspection at the checkpoint when a Panchagarh-bound bus of Orin Paribahan, coming from Dhaka, lost control and crashed into the parked truck and a police pickup van from behind. Two passengers died on the spot.
OC Omar Faruk said the injured were first taken to Pirganj and Mithapukur Upazila Health Complexes for initial treatment and later shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
The bus and the truck involved in the accident have been taken into custody by highway police.
