Many innocents falsely accused in July uprising cases: home adviser

Home Adviser Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has acknowledged that many innocent people were falsely implicated in cases over the mass uprising that shook the country during July and August last year.
"Although the trials have not progressed as much as they should have, significant progress has been made. Charge sheets have been filed in some cases," he told reporters on Thursday at an event in Munshiganj town to inaugurate the July Martyrs' Memorial at Lichutola.
"One issue was that many innocent people were also made accused. In some cases, 200 people were named where only 20 should have been accused. This has delayed the investigations. However, we will take steps to ensure those are concluded quickly," he said.
Referring to the government's ongoing observance of the '36 days of July' programme, he said, "This month consists of 36 days. For these 36 days, the government has arranged a programme. We are here today as part of that programme."
Industry, Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan was attended the event.
Speaking to the journalists, he said work was under way to turn the Gonobhaban into a museum, "based on the fall of fascism and the entire sequence of events over the past 15 years".
"At the same time, we are working to fulfil the mission of the July martyrs who fought for the freedom of Bangladesh people," he said.
He added, "We did not approve the '36 July Housing Project' in the ECNEC (Executive Committee of the National Economic Council)meeting because there are some inconsistencies in it. It will be reviewed. Some investigations are also necessary. After that, we will make a decision on the matter."
