Ali Riaz calls for cooperation to finalise national charter draft

Professor Ali Riaz, vice-president of the National Consensus Commission, today said that the next two to three days will be crucial for finalising the draft of the national charter.

Expressing hope, he also said that if the participating political parties continue to cooperate, it will be possible to formulate a historic document within this time frame.

"We want this charter to be a roadmap for the country's future," Prof Riaz said adding "Given the sincerity and cooperation shown by political parties so far, we are hopeful that we can reach a final agreement in the coming days."

He made the remarks during the opening of the 20th day of the second phase of dialogue between the commission and political parties at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.

"We have made significant progress in recent days, particularly yesterday," said Prof Riaz.

He added, "Today, we are also trying to finalise the language of the preamble and background of the national charter through mutual discussion. Although we have yet to begin formal talks on the powers of the president, other issues will continue to be discussed."

According to him, the commission has already reached consensus on 12 key issues with the political parties. However, disagreement remains on two other important matters, including the reintroduction of the caretaker government system.

Prof Riaz emphasised that none of the commission's proposals are final.

"These proposals have been revised multiple times through deliberations to ensure broader consensus. Our aim is not to impose any position, but to move forward with collective agreement," he said.

He highlighted the need for further discussion on several important topics, including women's political representation, the appointment process for constitutional bodies, electoral reforms, and public administration.

He added that the commission is working with the goal of finalising the National Charter, presenting it to the public, and having all political parties sign it, creating a historic document that will serve as a guiding framework for the future of Bangladesh.

He thanked the representatives of the political parties for their participation and urged them to continue their support for the remaining discussions.
