BNP amends charter to elect Tarique’s post in council
BNP has brought amendment to its constitution putting the post of senior vice-chairman, currently occupied by Tarique Rahman, in contest for council election.
The party’s standing committee, ace policy making body, put forward a proposal to amend the party charter in a meeting at BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office last night.
Later, in the meeting Khaleda Zia approved the proposal on the basis of the recommendation given by the standing committee members.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, spokesperson for the party, made the announcement at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office today.
A three-member election commission headed by the party’s standing committee member Jamir Uddin Sircar has been formed to make the election of this two posts a success, Fakhrul said.
Previously only the chairperson post could be elected. “Now the constitution has been amended so that the committee can also elect the party’s senior vice-chairman,” he added.
At least 11 subcommittees have been formed to the make the 6th national council of the party successful, he added.
About venue of the council, he said, “We are expecting to stage our national council either at Engineers’ Institute, Suhrawardy Udyan or at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.”
