Home Economics College shut after students' agitation
Home Economics College was closed sine die after its students damaged the office of the principal, the library and other rooms in protest at police's "charging truncheons on them for demonstrating on the road to realise their demands.
The college authorities asked students to vacate dormitories within 7:00pm yesterday.
As of 9:00 o' clock last night, the students were staging a sit-in at the Central Shaheed Minar, protesting the decisions.
Students of Home Economics College have been demanding the college to be declared as an institute of Dhaka University. Yesterday they brought out a procession reiterating their demand and blocked the road in front of the college from 12:00noon to 4:15pm, which created severe traffic jams in surrounding areas.
Police said they requested the students to leave the road but they did not. Later, alleging that the law enforcers charged truncheons on them, the students went on the rampage.
Police, however, denied the allegation.
They picked six girls who were later released at the request of Principal Prof Laila Arjumanara Banu, said Lalbagh police.
Different left-leaning student organisations, including Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, Kendriya Progotishil Chhatra Jote and Samajtantrik Mohila Forum, condemned the police "attack" on the students of Home Economics College.
