US Embassy video honours language martyrs

The US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Marcia Bernicat, and staff of the embassy marked the International Mother Language Day by solemnly honouring the language martyrs and conveyed their best wishes to the Bangladeshi people in a special video message.

In the video, the American staff honours those who sacrificed their lives to preserve the Bangla language. Holding placards, they wish the people of the country saying 'Amar Ekushey' (Immortal 21st) in their respective mother tongues.

Many American employees of the Embassy grew up speaking a language other than English, typical in a country with a rich and diverse tradition of welcoming immigrants.  These employees discuss how their mother language has enriched their lives and the United States, a press release issued by the US Embassy read.

"Language is the lifeblood of a nation, and we pay tribute to those who helped preserve the Bangla language throughout a dark period in history," said Ambassador Bernicat.  "Our team at the Embassy is honoured to share this video with you."

February 21 marks the International Mother Language Day in Bangladesh and around the world. The day is remembered with solemn fervour as we honour the language heroes who gave their life for the right to speak our beloved language Bangla.
