4-kid murder: Accused Bachchu killed in ‘gunfight’

An accused in Habiganj four-child murder case was killed in a "gunfight" with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Chunarughat upazila of the district early today.

The deceased Bachchu Mia was one of the accused in the murder case filed with Bahubal Police Station, said Kazi Moniruzzaman, company commander of Rab-9.

The four schoolboys who had gone missing from Sundrateki village in Bahubal upazila on February 12 were found buried at the village four days into their abduction.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a drive in Dawargachh area to arrest the accused around 4:30am, our Moulvibazar correspondent reports quoting the Rab officer.

Sensing presence of the Rab members, Bachchu along with his associates opened fire on the law enforcers. Rab then returned fire, triggering the "gunfight", the Rab official said.

Later, the bullet-hit body of Bachchu was found. His body was sent to Chunarughat Upazila Health Complex for autopsy.

The law enforcers recovered a pistol and two rounds of bullets from the spot.

Family members claimed that Bachchu was picked-up from his house by the law enforcers eight days ago.

So far, police arrested six persons so far for their suspected link in the murders. All the suspects are neighbours of the four children. 

Rubel Miah, one of the arrestees, reportedly confessed before a local court about his involvement in the killings.
