Jannati gets bail finally

The High Court today granted bail to Jannati Hossain, a young entrepreneur detained in a murder case after her business partner Mostamsir Ashraf died in a car crash.

On July 11 last year, Jannati crashed Mostamsir's car into a parked police van near Mohakhali flyover. Mostamsir, who was beside her, was gravely injured and died on the way to hospital, police said.

annati was later sued by Tejgaon police for reckless driving.

Mostamsir was the son of Khan Mohammad Abdul Mannan, a former district court judge and currently serving as the Inspector General of Registration (Land).

Ten days after the accident, Mostamsir's family lodged a murder case against Jannati, her brothers Jubair and Junaid, father Delwar Hossain and husband Raymen Siddique, alleging that the five had conducted a planned murder of Mostamsir to take over business.

The HC bench of Justice Md Nizamul Huq and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque granted her bail today after hearing a petition filed by Jannati.

The court, after delivering judgement, said that although there is no evidence of planned killing in this case, the trial court will examine whether there is any element of murder charge in it.

Abdul Baset Majumder, Jannati’s lawyer, told The Daily Star that there is no legal bar to his client’s release from Dhaka Central Jail following the HC order.

Ever since Jannati landed in jail, her family has been alleging that she was denied justice as Mostamsir's family is influential.

Mostamsir's uncle Hannan Khan, the complainant, however, said he wanted a proper investigation and would accept any outcome, denying the allegations.

Jannati and Mostamsir together launched Echo Sparks, a music cafe and gaming zone, in Uttara in December 2013. Jannati also founded Velocity, a car modification company, in partnership with her husband, and became managing editor of automobile magazine Torque.
