Buet teacher questioned over Avijit murder

Farseem Mannan Mohammedy

Detectives today questioned Farseem Mannan Mohammedy, an associate professor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), in connection with the killing of blogger-writer Avijit Roy.

Deputy Commissioner (media) Masudur Rahman of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said they had called Farseem to go to the Minto Road office of the Detective Branch as his name was mentioned by the victim's family earlier.

The DB officials investigating the case asked him different questions, said DC Masudur, declining to elaborate.

Contacted, Farseem said detectives had asked him about his relations with Avijit and various other issues.

Avijit, a Bangladesh born US citizen, was hacked to death on February 26, about two weeks after he came to Bangladesh from the US to visit his family and see two of his books published in the country's annual book fair.

Avijit's father Prof Ajoy Roy had earlier mentioned the name of the Buet teacher.

According to Ajoy, Farseem organised a meeting, which was attended by Avijit and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya, at Bangla Academy before the gruesome killing carried out on the Dhaka University campus.

Shafiur Rahman Farabi, who had issued repeated death threats to Avijit on Facebook, was arrested by Rab from Jatrabari on March 2.
