Khaleda awaits level-playing field: Emajuddin
Emerging from a meeting with Khaleda Zia, Prof Emajuddin Ahmed has said BNP will participate in the upcoming Dhaka and Chittagong city corporation elections if “level-playing field” is ensured.
“No explicit initiative has been taken to ensure a level-playing field so far. If the Election Commission ensures it and the situation improves, then there is no problem for BNP to participate in the polls,” he said.
“The BNP chairperson is waiting to see the steps the government and Election Commission take to create a congenial atmosphere,” said Prof Emajuddin, former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University.
A seven-member delegation of pro-BNP professionals headed by Prof Emajuddin, met the BNP chief at her Gulshan office this evening.
The professionals under the platform of Shoto Nagorik meaning hundred citizens on Wednesday met with Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed and placed a six-point recommendation for ensuring acceptable city polls.
Supreme Court Bar Association President Khandker Mahbub Hossain, Prof AFM Yusuf Haider, former pro-VC of DU, Prof Mahbub Ullah, a retired teacher of DU, Abdul Hye Sikder, president of a faction of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ), Rafiqul Islam Bachchu, joint secretary of Doctors Association of Bangladesh (Dab) and, senior journalist Mahfuz Ullah were in the delegation.
