Powerful quarters often occupy streets in the capital leaving construction materials on the road and footpaths showing no regard for citizens’ movement. This street in Gulshan is a blatant example of it. The street has almost disappeared as a local business conglomerate occupies the entire width of the street with heavy construction equipment and materials. It has not only forced pedestrians to wrestle every day but it has also stopped vehicular movement on the street altogether. The conglomerate is building a 22-story hotel at the junction of Gulshan Avenue and Road-98 near the DCC Market. The firm has also occupied half the footpath of the avenue. Photo: SK Enamul Haq

The pitch-black water has been the permanent feature of an overly polluted Shitalakhya River, a victim of indiscriminate dumping of industrial waste and sewage, near Kantchpur outside the capital.
