2 killed in Chapainawabganj mud collapse
Two people were killed as a big chunk of earth fell on them at an embankment site in Shibganj upazila on Chapainawabganj early today.
The victims were identified as Sirajul Islam, 45, son of Murshed Ali and Mohammad Dukhu, 35, son of Tofazzol Hossain of Babupur village in the upazila.
Sirajul and Dukhu were going to an embankment on Padma river in Bahalabari area to illegally collect geo-textile bags, which are used to build dams, around 12:30am, said Moinul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shibganj Police Station said.
As they reached near spar No.3, a pile of earth suddenly collapsed on them, killing the duo on the spot, the OC said.
As they did not return homes in morning, family members went to the bank of Padma River and found their spades there. Later, family members recovered their bodies under the soil with the help of locals.
Informed by locals, police recovered their bodies from the spot at around 9:30am and sent their bodies to Chapainawabganj Adhunik Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
