A cleaner died after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a sewerage line of tanneries in the capital's Hazaribagh area yesterday.

Abul Hossain, 55, felt sick after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning the sewerage line and failed to come out of  it, said Ataur Rahman, station officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters.

On information, a unit of firefighters rushed to the spot and rescued Hossain around 5:30pm, added the fire service official.

He was taken to Sikdar Womens' Medical College Hospital, and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where attending doctors declared him dead.
