EARTHQUAKE!!!
On April 25, 2015, an earthquake that measured 7.8 on the Richter Scale devastated the entire country of Nepal. Deadly avalanches were triggered around Mt Everest and countless homes and heritage sites all over the country now lie in heaps of rubble. The death toll in Nepal is now in the thousands. The intense aftershocks that can be felt here in Bangladesh, 750 km away from the epicentre, has struck fear into the hearts of many Bangladeshis (especially city dwellers) who are all wondering -can we survive an earthquake of this magnitude if it strikes us next? Can our infrastructure survive such a shock, or will we all be trapped under the concrete jungle we have spent years building around us? While we cannot predict the future, we can prepare for the worst. In this week's spotlight (pages 8-9) we have provided a list of safety precautions one can take in the event of such a disaster.
