‘Robber’ killed in ‘gunfight’ with Meherpur cops

An alleged robber was killed in a "gunfight" with police in Meherpur Sadar upazila early this morning.

Deceased Kalu Sardar alias Ganga Dacait, 42, is son of Bhanu Mondol of Baganpara area of the district, reports our Kushtia correspondent.

Ganga was wanted in several criminal cases including murder and robbery, said Hamidul Alam, superintendent of Meherpur police. "He was evading arrest," the SP added.

Acting on a tiff-off, a contingent of police raided a robbers' den in Collegemore area in the town around 5:30pm Tuesday and arrested Ganga.

Later, a team of police took him to Rajnagar village early today to seize arms following his confessional statement, said Ahsan Habib, officer-in-charge of Meherpur Sadar Police Station.

When police reached near Din Dutt Bridge at Rajnagar, the cohorts of Ganga opened gunfire on them. Police also fired shots in retaliation.

Ganga was caught in line of fire and died on the spot, the OC said.

Two police men -- Sub-inspector Krishnapada Das and Constable Minhaj Uddin – suffered injuries during the 'gunfight', the OC added.

Police recovered one locally-made firearm, two bullets, four hand bombs and two machetes from the spot.
