Modi hands liberation war honour to Vajpayee family

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the Bangladesh Liberation War Honour to the family members of ailing former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee today.

Modi, who received the honour on behalf of Vajpayee from Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid during his June 6-7 Dhaka visit, handed it over to Vajpayee's family members.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was also present on the occasion.

After handing over the honour, Modi tweeted "Visited Atal ji & was delighted to hand over the Bangladesh Liberation War Honour to his family."

Vajpayee, who was among the leading voices of support for Bangladesh's independence in 1971, had been afflicted for quite some time with age-related ailments.

While receiving the honour in Dhaka from Hamid, Modi had said that it was a matter of pride that he got it from someone who had taken part in Bangladesh's Liberation War.
