AL leader shot by Jubo League men
A ward-level Awami League leader was shot by local Jubo League men in Bangshal area of Dhaka following a dispute over campaigning in the recently held Dhaka South City Corporation election.
Mohammad Ripon, 38, organising secretary of Ward-35 unit AL, is receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital with bullet wounds in the right leg and hand.
Victim's brother Mohammad Lavlu told The Daily Star that a group of at least 15 Jubo League men, led by the Ward’s General Secretary Ashikur Rahman Ashik, swooped on Ripon while he was chatting inside his friend' shop at Malitola around 1:15pm.
They beat up him and shot in the legs and hand before running away. Ripon was rushed to DMCH immediately after the attack.
Lavlu alleged that Ashik is loyal to Ward Councillor Abu Saied, who was an AL rebel candidate in DSCC election.
"He carried out the attack on the behest of the councillor to take revenge as we campaigned for AL nominated candidate Golam Mostafa," he said.
Golam Mostafa admitted that Ripon was among his hundreds campaigners. Saied could not be reached over phone for a comment.
Kuddus Fakir, officer-in-charge of Bangshal Police Station, said they are trying to arrest the shooters.
When asked about the involvement of Jubo league men in the shooting, the OC said, “We will talk to the victim, when he feels well enough, to identify the criminals.”
