Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazler Noor Taposh today said they will reinstate the heritage of Dhaka city.

The mayor made this comment while visiting the Northbrook Hall, also known as Lalkuthi -- a historic site at Farashganj in Old Dhaka.

Northbrook Hall is a heritage site of Dhaka and the city corporation wants to recover it from the encroachers, said the mayor.

Taposh said they will hold programmes at the hall and will demolish all illegal structures adjoining the building to ensure a clear view of the heritage site from the Buriganga river.

According to Banglapedia, Northbrook Hall, an elegant building also known as Lalkuthi (red house), is situated at Wiseghat in Dhaka on the bank of the Buriganga river. It was originally built as a Town Hall and named after Lord Northbrook, Viceroy of India between 1872 and 1876.

Later, it was converted into a public library to which a clubhouse was added and called Johnson Hall. The building combines elements of Mughal architecture blended with architectural styles of the European renaissance.
