Dhaka city polls preparation nearly finished: EC

The Election Commission has almost completed preparatory work for the elections to the bifurcated Dhaka city corporations, an EC commissioner said today.

"Some minor tasks remained unfinished. We will solve it and hold a commissioner meeting. Then, we will announce the polls schedule," Mohammad Shahnewaz said.

He was talking to reporters at the EC secretariat at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka this afternoon.

The commission has started preparations for holding elections to the two city corporations which will be held in late May or early June.

The schedule for the city corporation election is usually declared around 40 to 45 days ahead of the polling day.

The last DCC election was held in April 2002. The polls could not be held in time due to complexities regarding the demarcation of the boundary of Dhaka South City Corporation.

Earlier on February 16, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a cabinet meeting asked LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam to take steps for holding the election.
