Man killed, 20 hurt in Rangpur election clash
A man was killed and 20 others including three law enforcers were injured as supporters of two chairman candidates of a Union Parishad clashed with police in Rangpur Sadar upazila this evening.
The deceased was identified as Lokman Hossain, 50, son of Lutfar Rahman of Palichara Dolapara village in the Sadar upazila, police said.
Among the 20 injured people, six who received bullet injures are Sajjad, 40, Sabuj, 22, Abdul Matin, 55, Rezaul, 29, Shah Alam, 25 and Anwar 35 were among the injured, Md Shamim, duty doctor at RMCH emergency unit, told the correspondent.
Supporters of UP chairman candidates Abdul Matin and Sohel Rana locked into an altercation when votes were being counted around 8:30pm at Palichara Khan Chowdhury Dakhil Madrasa polling centre in Saddyapushkurni Union Parishad, police and witnesses said.
At one stage, both sides locked into a clash leaving at least ten people injured.
The supporters later attacked the law enforcers while they were taking the ballot boxes to the district election office following the incident, our Rangpur correspondent reports quoting Md Abdul Qader Jilani, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rangpur Kotwali Police Station.
On duty police at the centre charged batons and fired bullets to disperse them from the area, the OC said.
Body of Lokman was taken to his village home after locals recovered it from the spot, the police official said.
The OC said law enforcers were sent to collect Lokman's body adding, "nature of his death cannot be confirmed at the moment as I have not seen the body yet," the correspondent reports.
Three policemen, Sub-inspector Mahbubul, Constables -- Zakaria and Ansarul -- were also injured at that time, OC said.
They were rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, the police official said.
Details on rest of the injured people were not available when this report was filed around 11:40pm.
