Road crashes kill 7 in Dhaka, Chattogram

At least seven people were killed and six others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka and Chattogram today.

In Chattogram, three people including a couple were killed and six others injured in a head-on collision between two buses on Cox’s Bazar-Chattogram highway in Patiya upazila.

The deceased were identified as Jahed Hossain, 41, his wife Nigar Sultana, 32, hailing from Chokoria in Cox’s Bazar, and Omar Faruk, 35, owner of a restaurant in the city, our local correspondent reports.

Bimal Chandra Bhoumik, an inspector of Patiya Highway Police Station, said a Cox’s Bazar-bound bus of Shyamoli Paribahan collided with a Chattogram-bound local bus at Shantirhat around 11:15 AM, leaving Faruk and Jahid dead and seven passengers including Nigar injured.

Nigar was taken to a private hospital where doctors declared her dead while her four-year-old son was receiving treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

All the deceased were the passengers of the local bus, said Inspector Bhoumik. The injured victims were taken to the CMCH, he added.

Police seized the buses but the drives managed to flee, the police official said.

In Dhaka, two people were killed as a bus hit their motorbike at Uttara this afternoon. Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately, police said.

A bus of Abhi Paribhan hit a motorcycle near Uttara (east) Police Station around 12:30 PM, leaving them injured critically, Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost, told The Daily Star.

They were taken to the DMCH where doctors declared them dead, the inspector said.

Noor-e-Alam Siddiqui, officer-in-charge of Uttara (east) Police Station, said that they seized the bus and arrested its driver.

Meanwhile, two people—Anwar Hossain, 40, and his nephew Salahuddin, 20, were killed as a bus hit them in Jatrabari area last night.

A bus of Anabil Paribahan hit the duo in Saddam Market area while they were crossing a road around 11:30 PM yesterday, leaving them injured critically, said Ahmed Nawajis, sub-inspector of Jatrabari Police Station.

They were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared them dead early today.
