Show cause notice on mayor aspirant

The Election Commission today issued a show cause notice to a mayor aspirant of the Dhaka North City Corporation elections for not bringing down the electoral posters.

Returning officer Md Shah Alam today issued the notice against Ekhlas Uddin Mollah as posters of his election campaign were not brought down till today, which is a violation of electoral code of conduct, a source at the EC office told The Daily Star.

Announcing the schedule at a press conference on March 18, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad asked the aspiring candidates, who are using billboards for electoral campaigns, to remove their posters from those within 48 hours of the schedule announcement.

The elections to Chittagong and bifurcated Dhaka city corporation polls will be held on April 28.

Meanwhile, Helena Zahangir, a mayor aspirant of DNCC, met Chief Election Commission Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad around 1:00pm today and urged him to take proper steps against the violators of electoral code of conduct.

Although the city corporation elections are nonpartisan in nature, many mayor aspirants have started already campaign and are using political identities, which are violation of electoral code of conduct, she stated in her written application submitted to the CEC.

Helena told this to reporters at the Election Commission Secretariat premises after the meeting with the CEC.
