Detectives today detained former Ekushey Television (ETV) reporter Kanak Sarwar in Dhaka’s Shahbagh area on charge of sedition.

Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told The Daily Star that Kanak was held around 2:00pm based on a statement by ETV Chairman Abdus Salam who is also facing sedition charges.

The ETV authorities, on January 15, sacked four officials, including Kanak who was a special correspondent, for their alleged involvement in telecasting BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman's speech live from London on January 5.

On January 8, a sub-inspector filed the sedition case with Tejgaon Police Station accusing that Tarique, Salam and other “conspirators” tried to create anarchy through broadcasting Tarique's speech live.
