15 Rajshahi BNP-Jamaat men jailed for life
A Rajshahi court today handed life term imprisonment to 15 leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP for violence in 2013.
The convicts were also fined Tk 10,000 each. In default, they will suffer six months more in prison, our Rajshahi correspondent reports quoting Public Prosecutor Entajul Haque.
Only one of the 15, Abdul Hamid, a Shibir activist, was present in the docks as the Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Golam Ahmed Khalilur Rahman delivered the verdict.
The tribunal sentenced 13 others to five years of rigorous imprisonment in the same case and acquitted some 32 others.
On December 11, 2013, the accused wiped out plates of Fakirtola Baily Bridge in Sirajganj’s Sadar upazila during the blockade sponsored by BNP and Jamaat in 2013 and clashed with police when intercepted.
Sub-Inspector Faruk Hossain of Sirajganj Police Station filed the case against 40 persons and later the police pressed charges against some 60 persons.
